Victory Vision Rider Conquers Ophir Pass on Street Tires

Victory Vision rider John Ogden on Ophir Pass

2013 Big Dog Adventure Ride

Piloting a 2012 Victory Vision motorcycle during the annual 2013 Big Dog Adventure Ride, John Ogden was awarded to world records.

First Victory motorcycle to ascend, summit and descend the Ophir Pass in Colorado from east to west.

Motorcyclist on the largest displacement motorcycle to ascend, summit and descend from east to west the Ophir Pass.

The Hatfield, Ark., native, topped the 11,789 foot-high Ophir Pass in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado on August 10, 2013. The 1731-cc displacement Vision motorcycle, with a dry weight of 869 lbs., was equipped with standard street tires.

A National Evangelist for the Christian Motorcyclists Association (www.cmausa.org), Ogden had made a circuitous route from his home office in Hatfield, Ark., to the Big Dog Adventure Ride (www.horizonsunlimited.com/bigdog) via the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Upon arriving at the annual Big Dog Adventure Ride, based this year in Ridgway, Colo., Ogden detached the trailer he had been towing and waited for a break in the inclement weather before attempting to top Ophir Pass. Storms the day before had made the 11,789 foot-high pass slippery and hour’s later snow was reported on neighboring passes.

Following world record rules, Ogden was on an “unassisted observed world record attempt.” No helpers, spotters, ropes or coaches/guides were used during Ogden’s record attempt. One observer of Ogden’s successful achievement said afterwards, “Simply amazing.”

The Big Dog Adventure Ride was supported for their 2013 event by BMW of Denver, Colorado (www.bmwofdenver.com), Bob’s BMW of Jessup, Maryland (www.bobsbmw.com), Globe Rider Productions and the well respected dual-sport and adventure motorcycle outfitters Happy Trails of Boise, Idaho (www.happy-trail.com).

  1. Let this be a lesson to all of you who downtalk the Vision, yet have never ridden one. It is simply the best handling and most capable touring bike on the road. Use this as a little inspiration to get out and ride one at a demo event or at your local Vic dealer. The Vision is simply an awesome handling machine!
