2014 Dakar Rally | Honda’s Joan Barreda Wins Stage 7

For the third time in the 2014 Dakar Rally, Team HRC Honda’s Joan Barreda Bort was victorious. The Spaniard, who also won stages one and three, was able to beat the overall leader Marc Coma by just over 4 minutes at the end of the Sunday’s stage seven.

The Red Bull KTM pilot Coma, who won stage 6, retains the overall lead by 38 minute 14 second lead over Barreda.

As for Red Bull Yamaha’s Cyril Despres, the five-time Dakar winner made up some needed time in stage seven, finishing 5 minutes 35 seconds behind Barreda. Overall, though, Despres is 10th, 2 hours 23 minutes 13 seconds behind three-time Dakar winner Coma.

The stage, which occurred following Saturday’s rest day, took riders 486 miles from Salta in Chile to Uyuni, Boliva with a 232-mile liaison and a 254-mile special. This was the first time in the Dakar’s 34-year history that racing occurred on Bolivian soil.

But due to rain, the special was shortened to 65 miles due to heavy rains in the Salta region.

Speaking of the stage, official Dakar reports say “more than enough to push man and machine to the limit, but not enough to keep a lid on the rider standing second overall. Barreda made good use of his fifth place in this morning’s starting order to unleash a flurry of attacks and grab his third victory this year and the eighth one of his career, 4 minutes 3 minutes ahead of fellow countryman Coma.

“The Catalan, third off the line this morning, drove within his limits throughout stage 7, holding onto Barreda’s wheel once the latter had caught up with him and clinging on to limit the difference between himself and his main rival for the title. A carbon copy of the tactic used by defending champion Despres, who finished third in Uyuni, 5 minutes 35 seconds behind the stage winner.

“Today’s flop was Alain Duclos, who suffered the opener’s cure and made a navigation mistake towards the beginning of the stage, costing him almost 20 minutes in Uyuni, the site of the historic bivouac of the second marathon stage of the 36th edition.

“As a result, the Samnsung Sherco rider lost his third place in the provisional overall classification to Red Bull KTM’s Jordi Viladoms by just 32 seconds. Coma’s former lieutenant now sits in third place, but 38 minutes behind second-placed Barreda, which is almost the same gap as between the Honda rider and leader Coma. The fight for the title during the second week is shaping up to be a duel in the desert.”

Check out the stage-seven action during the “Dakar Rally Series,” which will air on NBC Sports Network at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13.

2014 Dakar Rally Stage 7 Quotes:

Joan Barreda Bort (Team HRC Honda CRF450 Rally) says: “I’m happy with the stage. I started thirst and, after catching up with the leaders, I spent the entire stage riding strong at the front. Navigation was very important. Marc caught up with me and we rode fast.

“We had to be careful because the tracks were slippery and dangerous. At the end there were about 40 kilometers of mud, where we also had to b cautious. But all went well. I maintained my pace until the finish. I’m delighted with the stage.”

Marc Coma (Red Bull KTM 450 Rally) says: “It was a beautiful special. This is the first time we’ve been to Bolivia and it’s breathtaking. But the cold and the altitude have left me completely voiceless. There isn’t much to do with the motorcycle.”

Alain Duclos (Samsung Sherco 450 SR) says: I didn’t really care because the death of Eric [Palante] was still fresh in my mind and the altitude gave me a headache. So I wasn’t really focused. As a result, I got lost in the first part of the special, and thereafter I just tried to make it to the finish.

“Then, in the second part, I woke up and pulled out all the stops to try and get back all the time I’d lost in the first special. At any rate, the motorcycle doesn’t miss a beat, the entire Sherco team has worked hard on the machine, and it shows. Nothing to report, everything is well.”

Cyril Despres (Red Bull Yamaha YZF450) says: “I made sure to breathe in deeply on a couple of ridges, because it’s true that when you go on the attack you feel that the altitude affects you a bit physically.

“A nice special, not too difficult, but with lots of technical, fun parts. I’m always wary when I see mud because you never know what lurks beyond a puddle. If the water is brown, you can’t see whether it’s 20 or 50 cm deep, so it’s easy to fall. Of course, it’s not easy to drive in the mud and fill the radiators and air inlets with filth, but no worries, we’ll clean it up.”

2014 Dakar Rally: A Look at Stage 8 (Monday, Jan. 13):

Stage 8 of the 2014 Dakar Rally will take riders 430 miles from Uyuni, Bolivia, to Calama, Chile (143-mile liaison, 287-mile special).
