The 2012 Dakar Rally took riders from San Juan to Chilecito Wednesday, another grueling stage that passed through the Province of Rioja.

During Stage Four of 14, the motorcycle compeititors completed 466 miles, 202 of which were timed. And who came out on top? Three-time Dakar winner Marc Coma aboard the MRW Red Bull AMV KTM 450 Rally; it was Coma’s second-stage win of 2012 Dakar.

Following Coma in Stage Four were his rival and teammate, Red Bull KTM’s Cyril Despres, and
Sheraco’s Frans Verhoeven in third.

Although he won the stage, he only took 2:02 of the Frenchman Despres, who dominated on Tuesday. In the overall standings, Coma is now 10:12 behind Despres, with Yamaha’s Helder Rodrigues a further 26:48 back.

With Coma and Despres over 15 minutes ahead of the field, it’s easy to see why KTM has been the winner of the last 10 Dakar Rallies – and why Coma and Despres have collectively won the last six editions.
