Much prep goes into the Dakar Rally, which is coined as the world’s toughest race.

Marc Coma held on to his lead over the last stage to win the 2011 Dakar 15’04 ahead of eternal rival Cyril Despres (Red Bull KTM).

There was however a major podium upset when Chaleco Lopez’s suspension broke just kilometres from the end, handing third place to the Portuguese rider Helder Rodrigues.

During Stage 8 of the 2011 Dakar Rally, Over the long 508 km special, from Antofagasta to Copiapo, victory went to Marc Coma, 1’55 ahead of Cyril Despres on his Red Bull KTM, with Chaleco Lopez third at 4’21. Overall Coma increases his lead to 9’19 over Cyril with Lopez now at 22’48.

Dakar 2011

At the end of Stage 7 of the 2011 Dakar Rally, Chaleco Lopez on his Aprilia motorcycle received a hero’s welcome on arriving victorious at the bivouac in Antofagasta 2’21 ahead of Cyril Despres on his Red Bull KTM with Marc Coma, also KTM, third at 3’45.

During Stage 5 of the 2011 Dakar Rally, victory on the special went to Paulo Gonçalves ahed of local hero ‘Chaleco’ Lopez at 2’18, with Verhoeven third (at 2’19).

Cyril Despres riding the Red Bull KTM finished fifth at 4’10 with fellow KTM enduro motorcycle rider Ruben Faria 7th at 12’05.
