The fifth stage of the 2011 Dakar, 427 km, finishes after a 2.3 km downhill from the dunes to the coast of the Pacific Ocean, where the bivouac is located. It is here, in the Atacama Desert, where we start to watch the greatest battles of the Dakar.
Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa stormed to a flag-to-flag victory in the U.S. Grand Prix before a sun-drenched crowd of nearly of over 46,000 on the challenging Laguna Seca circuit within sight of the Pacific Ocean in Monterey, California.
Starting fourth on the grid, the Spaniard jetted into the lead over the turn one crest and into the turn two left hand hairpin. Then he was gone. Pedrosa set one fast lap after another to pull away to what seemed a certain victory. But on the final lap Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) made a robust challenge to Pedrosa, closing onto his rear tire in the final turn.
Motorcyclists looking for adventure are invited to participate in RawHyde’s Adventure Riders Challenge at RawHyde Adventure Center – BMW’s new West Coast off-road academy, May 14-17. The event, sponsored by BMW Motorrad USA, covers almost 500 miles over mountains with a view of the Pacific Ocean followed by desert riding the next day. Most of the route is dirt – all of it is scenic.
