The Kawasaki KZ1000 Z1-R motorcycle was produced between the years of 1978 and 1980. The now classic bike produced a claimed 90 hp at 8,000 rpm with a top speed of 132 mph back in the day.
Cycle Guide (Jan. 1978) said: "The Z1-R can exceed any U.S. speed limit in first gear, and it can get past the magic 100 mph mark in third. Our bike did the standing-start quarter mile in 12.13 seconds at 109.6 mph, making it second only to the Yamaha 1100 on the list of all-time fastest accelerators."
To boost performance, Turbo Cycle Corporation, got a hold of a few Kawasaki Z1-Rs and decided to add turbo charges to the KZ1000. The turbo bikes were then sold though a few select Kawasaki dealers between the years 1978 and 1979.
An old article in Motorcyclist Magazine clocked the turbo at 10.90 seconds at 130 mph in 1978.
By 1980 the run was over as California law squashed the new modified turbo motorcycles after about 500 were built in total.
