Valentino Rossi’s performance throughout the 2011 MotoGP pre-season was very unusual, the Italian not adapting well to the Ducati Team GP11.
But on Thursday when the MotoGP grid began practicing for the 18-round season opener at Losail International Circuit, Qatar, Rossi was with the leading pack, posting the fifth fastest lap in FP1.
The 17-rider MotoGP grid will be lacking its only Suzuki rider this weekend at the Losail International Circuit, Qatar.
Rizla Suzuki GSV-R’s sole rider, Alvaro Bautista, broke his left femur after a high-side at Turn 15. This immediately ended the Spaniard’s participation in Sunday’s opening round of the 2011 MotoGP Championship.

In a change to the usual timings, brought about by the night-time schedule, riders took to the circuit for 45minutes tonight for the first official free practice session of the Qatar MotoGP weekend.

There’s no doubt Marc Marquez has quickly adapted to the Moto2 class.
Throughout the 2011 Moto2 pre-season tests, the 18-year-old Spaniard had positive results, and these results were duplicated Thursday at Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2 for the opening round of the season at Qatar.
In Moto2 Yuki Takahashi grabbed the quickest time of the second practice session in the dying moments, beating Scott Redding (Marc VDS Racing) by just 0.053 of a second as the intermediate class and the 125s ran two practices on Thursday at Losail International Circuit, Qatar, as opposed to the single one for MotoGP.

Last week welcomed the official start of the AMA Pro Road Racing series at the traditional opening round at Daytona. The results were amazing (albeit controversial).
Due to their top finishes at the two-day tests earlier this week at Losail International Circuit in Qatar, the Honda RC212V prototypes are the favorites going into the MotoGP season opener this weekend.
Repsol Honda team rider Casey Stoner was quickest both days, and his teammates Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso weren’t far behind.
At the final pre-season MotoGP test in Qatar, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo was unable to find proper setup, but was confident in the results. Lorenzo finished Monday’s session with an extended run to check on fuel consumption, ending the final test of the winter in eight positions overall on the time sheets.
It hasn’t been a typical pre-season for MotoGP Champion Valentino Rossi. One only has to look to the 2011 numbers to quickly understand how much Rossi has struggled adapting to the Ducati GP11.
In the Sepang 1 test, Rossi finished 11th overall on the GP11, 1.085 seconds behind leader Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V).
