    Starting the Dakar Rally first this morning, after teammate Ruben Faria received a one-minute time penalty yesterday evening, Cyril Despres and his Red Bull KTM 450cc machine opened the piste the entire length of today’s special.

    Despres easily took the enduro motorcycle racing victory 1’49 ahead of Marc Coma, with David Casteu third (at 3’46).

    407 racers and crew will take the starter’s orders for the 2011 Dakar Argentina Chile, which begins tomorrow with a starting ceremony at the foot of the Obelisk in Buenos Aires, followed by a warm-up stage to Victoria, before a first timed stage on Sunday morning.

    Dakar Stage Four: Despres and Coma update

    Marc Coma, the current Dakar title holder and KTM-supported rider rose to the challenge on Tuesday to take victory in the fourth stage of the Dakar 2010 as riders descended down the Andes into Chile heading for the notorious Atacama Desert.

    KTM’s Cyril Despres came in third in the stage, 3’14 behind Coma but continues to maintain his overall lead. He is currently almost nine minutes in front of second placed David Casteu in the overall rankings.

    In the car category, Stéphane Peterhansel picked up his 52nd special stage victory on the Dakar and his 19th on four wheels. In the truck race, Vladimir Chagin won his third consecutive stage, picking up the 50th triumph of his career.

    The 2010 Dakar third (3) stage, marked by mechanical problems for Coma and Frétigné, as well as the withdrawal of Viladoms, was won by Cyril Despres, new leader in the general standings. He now boasts a lead of 10’03” over David Casteu. In the car category, Stéphane Peterhansel picked up his 52nd special stage victory on the Dakar and his 19th on four wheels. In the truck race, Vladimir Chagin won his third consecutive stage, picking up the 50th triumph of his career.

    David Frétigné’s Day

    The day’s special stage (2010 Dakar Stage 2) goes to David Frétigné, who gets his eighth stage victory in a Dakar finishing 43” ahead of David Casteu, who still remains leader in the overall standings. In the cars category, Volkswagen is putting its cards on the table with Nasser Al Attiyah, who achieved both best clock and nr.1 position in the standings. Four of the Race Touareg are in the day’s Top 5.

    Behind the handlebars of a brand new 450cc, David Casteu has thrown the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons on the first stage of the Dakar (2010 Dakar Stage 1). He has taken the lead in the general standings with the day’s best time in front of the two favourites for outright victory, Cyril Despres and Marc Coma. In the car race, Joan "Nani" Roma picked up the second stage victory of his career in the car category, in Cordoba, like in 2009. In the truck category, Vlaldimir Chagin leads the rally with a lead of 27” over Ales Loprais.
