2011 MotoGP: Assen TT Highlights (Video)

After the first two laps of the Assen TT MotoGP Saturday, four riders would crash – pole-sitter Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini), Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing), Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Ducati) and Randy de Puniet (Pramac Ducati).

The first occurred between Simoncelli and Lorenzo, and it already has created controversy for the Italian. The other two were single-rider crashes; unfortunately Abraham and de Puniet weren’t able to rejoin the grid like Lorenzo and Simoncelli.

Although the first two laps at the cold Assen TT circuit were plagued with crashes, the GP was anything but a problem for the American Ben Spies. The Yamaha Factory Racing rider took the lead on the first lap and went on to lead all 26 laps of the race, taking his maiden MotoGP victory.

Spies would finish an amazing 7.697 seconds ahead of series leader Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda). Stoner’s teammate Andrea Dovizioso would take the final podium spot.
