Eight poles, 12 podiums and three wins allowed Josh Hayes to achieve his second consecutive AMA Superbike Championship during one of the tightest seasons on record.

Throughout the 2011 AMA SBK year, the 36-year-old Monster Energy Graves Yamaha R1 rider battled with Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young for the points lead.

And this battle would boil down to the AMA Superbike season finale at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Heading into NJMP, Hayes trailed Young by five points. But after taking the race-1 win, Hayes had an 11-point advantage over Young, although the Suzuki rider was still in contention.

But not by much; if Young would have won Race 2, Hayes would have only needed a third-place finish or better to achieve the title. Well, Young did win, but although he fell back to as far as fifth, and there were many changes up front, Hayes finished second, taking the 2011 AMA Superbike title on the last lap.

Attached above is a video from Yamaha that highlights Josh Hayes 2011 AMA Superbike season.
