For the second time since Catalunya MotoGP, San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli will start from the pole position.
The Italian edged out Yamaha Factory Racing’s Ben Spies Friday at Assen qualifying by a mere 0.009 of a second, with the current MotoGP points’ leader, Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner, a further 0.290 of a second behind Simoncelli.
2011 Assen MotoGP
Since Ducati reported earlier this week that Valentino Rossi would be competing on the GP11.1, an updated version of his MotoGP prototype, many expect the Italian to return to his nine-time World Championship-winning ways this weekend at Assen.
2011 125 MotoGP
Jonas Folger (Red Bull Ajo Motorsport) set the fastest time in the first 125cc practice of the Iveco TT Assen.
Sandro Cortese (Intact Racing Team Germany) and Maverick Viñales (Blusens by Paris Hilton Racing Team) followed with second and third quickest times.
When the third and final practice session was complete, Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner had scored another trifecta.
The Australian swapped the lead time with San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli, but towards the end of FP3 Stoner posted a 2:03.487, which remained the top time.
2011 World Superbike
During the opening day World Superbike at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah for the only USA round of the series, Carlos Checa was unstoppable.
The Althea Ducati 1198R rider couldn’t be touched in Free Practice 1 Saturday, and continued this trend during the first free qualifying practice, taking the provisional pole for Miller Superbike.
France MotoGP Free Practice
During the second MotoGP Free Practice session at Le Mans Friday, Casey Stoner again showed domination aboard the Repsol Honda RC212V.
The Australian was four-tenths quicker than his FP1 time, which allowed him to further shatter the Le Mans circuit record set by Valentino Rossi in 2008.
