Following the German Grand Prix, the American Nicky Hayden underwent wrist surgery in hopes of relieving pain from an injury that plagued him since Valencia 2011.
During that race, Hayden crashed, breaking his right hand (scaphoid). He had an operation, and two more in attempts to cure the pain. But nothing. This prompted the 2006 MotoGP Champion’s latest surgery.
The Drive M7 Aspar Honda RCV1000R pilot was forced to miss the last two rounds at Brno and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His team also confirmed that Hayden will miss the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Substituting for Hayden – just as he did at Brno and Indy – will be the Brit Leon Camier.
But Hayden hopes to return to the MotoGP grid for Misano Sept. 14. He recently released the following statement updating fans on his condition.
“I have seen my doctor this week. He examined my wrist and was able to see the movement in the joint especially, to see how everything was looking inside. I am pretty happy with what he is saying.
“I am not 100% yet and am going to miss at least one more race, which I don’t like because I love Silverstone. As soon as I first went there, I fell in love with the place. I even had the fastest lap there a few years ago (in 2011) and was the first Ducati home every time…but it looks like I will get the green like to come back healthy and have some fun at Misano or Aragon.
“In the meantime, I want to thank my supporters for all of your support. At Indy I was able to interact with a lot of people and even during the Brno weekend a lot of people were tweeting me with photos of my gear and merchandise; it was kind of cool to see everybody sticking behind me, even though I wasn’t at the track!
“I’m looking forward to coming back soon. Again, thanks to you guys and especially to my team: everybody at Aspar, Drive M7 and Honda. I’ll catch you down the road and hopefully soon we’ll be back on track! Adios!”
