A UK online retailer of ear plugs – Allearplugs.com – has launched a new Hearing Safety Campaign aimed at raising awareness of the hearing damage caused by excessive exposure to loud noises.

Allearplugs.com began the campaign in the world of music, and has now moved onto motorsports, including motorcycle racing.

And a few known names in MotoAmerica and AMA Pro Racing are now supporting this new hearing safety campaign – Melissa Paris, Corey Alexander and Jordan Imrie. Each of these riders will share the campaigns message with their online followers.

Allearplugs.com says the endorsement from professional riders is incredibly valuable, with motorsport enthusiasts constantly at risk of hearing damage. 80dB is generally accepted as the “danger” zone for hearing, and an average motorbike will generate noise of over 100dB.

Alexander, who competes in MotoAmerica’s Supersport class, says “For me, I can’t ride on or off the track without ear plugs. When I find a comfortable pair that works well it really makes my riding experience that much better, plus it keeps my ears safe. Also, when I’m on the track it’s really important to be able to focus solely on the road ahead and not having tons of wind noise makes a world of difference.”

Wind noise can also be a bit of a ‘silent killer’ for riders, with the turbulence generated at high speeds capable of reaching 103dB. The combination of both noises means that riders are regularly exposed to levels capable of damaging their hearing within minutes. If protection isn’t worn, riders are almost certain to experience some form of hearing damage in the medium to long-term, and maybe even sooner than that, Allearplugs.com says.

Paris, who in 2013 earned her season-best 10th place finish in the Daytona 200 says “The wind noise you experience when you’re riding is really damaging to your hearing. Aside from that, I find that by cutting noise earplugs help me to focus and concentrate better when I’m racing.”

In the US, around 20 percent of adults – 48 million people – have reported some form of hearing loss, and about 30 school children out of every 1,000 suffer from the condition.

Canada’s Imrie, who has won four times at Daytona, says “It is so important to wear hearing protection when on the track or on the road. Causing damage to your hearing can be easily done when you love riding, which is why I’m proud to lend my support to the Allearplugs.com Save Your Hearing campaign.”

About Allearplugs.com Hearing Safety Campaign

Allearplugs.com started the campaign in order to try and raise awareness of an issue that still isn’t receiving the attention it deserves. Anyone can be affected by hearing damage.

Motorbikes remain popular on both sides of the Atlantic. In the US, sales grew by 3.8 per cent in 2014 alone, with over 460,000 new bikes being sold. On UK roads, meanwhile, there are over 1 million licensed motorbikes, and it’s believed that there are 1.3 million active riders.

Managing Director Rob Doole says “It’s important to raise awareness of the potential damage bike enthusiasts are doing to their hearing. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying time on the track or road, but be sure to invest in some form of protection: it’s worth it.”
