To Ride or Not To Ride

Riding a motorcycle is a unique experience. Riding is fun and invigorating, yet the skills needed for safe riding, combined with the lack of car-like crash protection on a motorcycle, can cast doubts on whether a person should choose to ride a motorcycle. Some potential riders lack the ability to execute skilled and timely actions in a complex traffic environment; others lack keen judgment or don't have a firm grasp of the concept of risk management.

During the first six months of 2009, motorcycle fatalities in California have declined, reversing a troubling 11-year trend. From January through June of 2009, 198 persons were killed in motorcycle related crashes, compared to 264 for the same period in 2008, according to preliminary figures supplied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. After seeing increases averaging 10 percent per year since the low point of 204 fatalities in 1998, this signals a decline of 25 percent.

Helmets Make Sense

Click video to watch. The first United Nations World Youth Assembly for Road Safety was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The Motorcycle Industry Council was asked to provide information on helmet use, and in consultation with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation produced this video for the Assembly.

Confirm DOT Standards

The motorcycle Helmet Check website was developed by the Motorcycle Industry Council's (MIC) Helmet Task Force. It is for motorcycle riders to verify that a helmet they own, or are considering for purchase, complies with the U.S. Department of Transportation's safety standard (FMVSS 218) is now live. This will assist riders with motorcycle helmets that no longer have the DOT sticker or riders that question whether the DOT sticker is authentic.

Rider safety and training opportunities just got a whole lot more plentiful in the greater Dallas/Ft. Worth metro area, thanks to the new MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Campus at Irving, Texas. The MSF Campus at Irving offers the complete system of MSF street and off-road rider education and training opportunities available to date including the Basic RiderCourse, the Experienced RiderCourse, and the DirtBike School, as well as the ATV Safety Institute's ATV RiderCourse.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation is opening the doors to rider perception with the fifth program in its community-based Host-an-Event series. The goal of the new Street Smart - Rider Perception program is to improve a rider's perceptive abilities when riding in traffic.
