2014 Catalunya MotoGP Friday Practice Results
Though Monster Tech3 Yamaha’s Bradley Smith was quickest in the second free practice at Catalunya MotoGP, the overall fastest rider was the top open-class rider so far this season, NGM Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro.
The Spaniard’s time? A 1:41.672 set with a softer rear compound tire, much faster than the FP2 times. To put this time into perspective, the best pole lap was a 1:40.893 set by Dani Pedrosa last season (Repsol Honda RC213V).
Under scorching temperatures, Smith finished FP2 with a best lap of 1:42.123, which was over a second quicker than his morning time. Joining him up front was LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl and the reigning MotoGP Champion who won the opening six rounds from the pole, Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez.
Next in FP2 was Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Jorge Lorenzo, who was 0.159 of a second off the top time. The top four were grouped closely together, but the fifth-place rider in FP2 – Aleix Espargaro – was 0.485 of a second off the top time.
Two Italians followed – Pramac Racing Ducati’s Andrea Iannone and Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi. Iannone suffered a small crash at turn 10, but walked away unharmed.
Rounding out the top 10 were Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3), Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team).
Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar) rode 32 laps over the course of the day as he assessed the condition of his right wrist, on which he had surgery after missing Mugello. He ended the day 19th overall.
