When the race began, Lorenzo claimed the holeshot, passing pole-sitter Maverick Vinales on the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP YZR-M1. Vinales went wide while in second, placing Rossi into second, followed by Ducati Team’s Dovizioso and Marquez.
As Rossi closed in on Lorenzo, Vinales was attacked from behind by Pedrosa. Marquez got pass Dovi and Rossi, and briefly into the lead before running off the track. But he regained his rhythm, and was able to pass Lorenzo for the lead on lap 15 of 23.
From there he would pull away from the pack, and eventually claim the 2017 Aragon MotoGP win by 0.879 of a second ahead of Pedrosa. Lorenzo was able to claim third, 2.028 second back.
Fourth went to Vinales, who finished ahead of Rossi, Aprilia Racing Team Gresini’s Aleix Espargaro and Dovizioso.
Rounding out the top 10 were Alvaro Bautista (Pull&Bear Aspar Team), Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing). Wildcard Red Bull KTM pilot Mika Kallio impressed, finishing 11th.
The series now breaks for three weeks ahead of the Japan Grand Prix at Motegi. With four rounds remaining, Marquez has 224 points, 16 ahead of Dovizioso; 28 ahead of Vinales; 54 ahead of Pedrosa; and 56 ahead of Rossi. One-hundred points are up for grabs, and it can be anyone of these five rider’s titles.
