Kenny Roczen and Joey Savatgy continued their winning ways at the High Point National in Mt. Morris, Pa. The rough track conditions and hot weather really sought to test the riders physically and mentally. The Jimmy Johns RCH Suzuki RM-Z 450 pilot Roczen has now won seven of the eight Moto’s in the 450 class so far. Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Joey Savatgy is proving to be one of the more serious 250 class title contenders.

“I was pushing 100 percent out there, but also not really,” Roczen said after earning the 1-1 victory. “I didn’t want to be out of control because the track was difficult,” said Roczen. “There were a couple areas on the track that cost me some time [to other riders], but I just stuck to what I was doing. It was warm out there, but we got the starts we needed and I was able to ride my own race.”

The opening 450 Moto began with Roczen and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac attempting to sprint away from the rest of the pack. The battle was short lived though; Tomac crashed early, allowing Roczen to quickly get away. Tomac quickly scrambled to save his race and got up in sixth.

After Tomac’s crash, a four-man battle ensued for second place between Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin, HRC Honda’s Cole Seely, and the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna teammates Christophe Pourcel and Jason Anderson.

Anderson drew first blood in the four-way battle; he passed teammate Christophe Pourcel early on for fourth and kept charging to catch Musquin and Seely, who were engaged in a battle for second. Anderson would eventually catch and pass his old 250 class rival, Cole Seely, and take over third place, where he would finish the Moto.

After setting some of the fastest laps of the race, Eli Tomac was able to latch onto Christophe Pourcel, the pair then made a charge to catch Seely. A late Moto crash would force Seely to fall back to ninth. Pourcel was able to halt Tomac’s advance and secure fourth in Moto one.

After thirty minutes plus two laps here’s how the top five finished: Roczen, Musquin, Anderson, Pourcel, and Tomac.

The second 450 Moto began with the Toyota Autotrader Weinerschnitzel NFab JGRMX Yamaha’s Justin Barcia taking the lead early in the race, but Ken Roczen quickly caught and passed him, in hopes of repeating his Moto One performance.  Anderson and Tomac wasted no time getting by Barcia either; they didn’t want to let the 94 of Ken Roczen have another Moto win without a fight.

Tomac appeared to be returning to his old ways, charging and attacking the track at a blistering pace. He made quick work of Anderson for second, and immediately set his sights on Roczen. Tomac and Roczen began to wick up the pace, and break away from the rest of the pack. The two riders battled back and forth for the fastest lap of the race, each getting progressively faster. Ten minutes into Moto two, the running order was: Roczen, Tomac, Anderson, Barcia, and Musquin.

Marvin Musquin put on an impressive mid-Moto charge; he made his way up into third place and also managed to set some of the fastest laps of the race at that point.

Geico Honda Rider Justin Bogle led his HRC Honda counterpart Cole Seely in an impressive charge to catch up to Justin Barcia late in the Moto. Their charge for Barcia was too little, too late. Seely would eventually pass Bogle for the sixth position in Moto two, relegating Bogle to seventh.

Eli Tomac kept Kenny Roczen’s in close sight through out the remainder of the race. When the Moto concluded, the running order was: Roczen, Tomac, Anderson, Musquin, and Barcia. The overall scores were: Roczen (1,1), Anderson (3,3), Musquin (2,4), Tomac (5,2), and Barcia (7,5).

2016 High Point 250 Supercross Recap

The 250 race may have been one of the most dramatic races we’ve seen all year – it was a real test of man and machine. 250 Moto one began with the Martin brothers aboard their Star Racing Rockstar Energy YZ250F’s battling with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne aboard his FC250 machine. Alex Martin quickly slipped past his brother Jeremy to take the lead, Osborne followed suit. Alex Martin quickly pulled out a four second lead over the rest of the pack.

Zach Osborne was determined to catch Alex Martin, and began cutting down his lead. As Martin and Osborne began to sprint away, Star Racing Rockstar Energy Yamaha’s Cooper Webb managed to get by Geico Honda’s RJ Hampshire for fourth; making the Star Racing Yamaha bikes first, third and fourth.

Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Joey Savatgy had a rough start to the Moto, after passing Hampshire for fifth he had a crash, which cost him several positions. Savatgy was luckily able to manage his mistake throughout the remainder of the race and salvage a fourth (He was docked one position for a rule violation).

Just before the half way mark Jeremy Martin mounted an attack to catch his brother and Osborne, who had previously dropped him. Osborne finally got around the elder Martin brother at the halfway mark. A game of cat and mouse began late in the Moto between the two riders. As Osborne would stretch his lead out, Alex Martin would answer back with a faster lap, cutting the lead back down. That was until disaster struck, Alex Martin’s bike began to billow smoke and would eventually cause him to DNF late in the Moto.

After a hard fought battle, Zach Osborne won his first Moto here in the states. Here’s how they stacked up at the end of the Moto: Osborne, Jeremy Martin, Webb, Savatgy, and Forkner.

The second 250 Moto was just as action packed and chaotic as the first! When the gate dropped former amateur prodigy Adam Cianciarulo, pulled a big holeshot to lead the pack around the first turn! He quickly began trying to build a lead and break away from the rest of the pack; he had Jeremy Martin, Joey Savatgy, Zach Osborne, and Alex Martin quickly in-tow.

Joey Savatgy and Alex Martin both made their way around Jeremy Martin in their pursuit of catching Cianciarulo for the lead. Savatgy overtook his teammate for the lead, ten minutes into the Moto after an intense battle. Cianciarulo wasn’t going to go down without a fight though; he fended off a several charges from Alex Martin, but eventually had to relinquish the position.

Fifteen minutes into the Moto, the running order of the top five was: Savatgy, Alex Martin, Cianciarulo, Jeremy Martin, and Plessinger.

Plessinger put on a strong charge to catch and pass his teammate and reigning national champion, Jeremy Martin. Then disaster once again struck the Star Racing team and Martin family. This time though, it was Jeremy’s bike that began to billow smoke and caused him to fail to finish the race.

As the laps began to wind down, Osborne managed to make his way into fourth, creating a tie for the overall with Joey Savatgy. The pair of riders had both received a first and fourth; but Savatgy’s second Moto win gave him the overall. When the Moto concluded this is how they finished: Savatgy, Alex Martin, Plessinger, Osborne, and Webb. The overall scores were: Savatgy (4-1), Osborne (1-4), Webb (3-5), Plessinger (6-3), and Forkner (5-8).

The series now heads to Tennessee for round five of 12 in Blountville.
