Kevin Windham, one of the most popular riders in the history of professional motocross racing, will return to action this Saturday during the Legends of Motocross race at the Bud Light Ironman National at Ironman Raceway. Just as he did in his heyday, Windham will compete on a Factory Connection-prepared GEICO Honda emblazoned with his iconic #14 during the Legends of Motocross special event.

“I’m honored that GEICO Motorcycle Insurance is supporting my race weekend,” Windham said. “Everyone at GEICO was so supportive during my racing career and that continues now into my ‘legend’ years as well. It’s really cool, and by the way, every bike I ride is covered by GEICO Insurance because they truly are the best in the business.”

While admitting to gaining a few pounds since his last professional race in the spring of 2013, Windham says he still rides his dirt bikes on a regular basis at his ranch in Centerville, Miss.

“My kids all want to ride every day, so I have a lot of fun chasing them around,” Windham said. “And every once in a while one of the youngsters from the regular MX tour stops by to ask me how we did things back in the day and we’ll usually go out and ride around. I still keep the tracks in form.”

A brainchild of MX Sports promoter Davey Coombs, the Legends of Motocross race gives fans a chance to see their all-time-favorite riders rip around the same course as today’s stars. This year’s field of legends includes Windham, Ricky Carmichael, Jeff Emig, Guy Cooper, Tim Ferry, Jeff Stanton, and many others.

“There has been some discussion about how hard we’re going to race,” Windham said. “We are still racers at heart and we’re going to want to win, but at the same time I don’t think any of us want to take a dirt nap. These old bodies don’t rebound like they used to after all.

“The main thing is to have fun with each other and visit with the fans. It’s cool as my kids get older for them to see the sport that was such a big part of my life for so many years.”

There will be two practice sessions for the Legends of Motocross race, one from 4:30 to 5 p.m., Friday, and another from 9:40 to 9:55 a.m., Saturday. The main event will begin with a site lap at 12:25 p.m.

Windham will pit with GEICO Honda teammates Justin Bogle, Christian Craig, R.J. Hampshire, Jordon Smith, and Matt Bisceglia and will be available for autographs and photos throughout the day in the GEICO Honda pit. He’ll also join the gang in the TV booth during the 250 and 450 main events.

“One thing I’m really kind of jazzed about is riding this track,” Windham said. “It will be totally new to me, but it looked like a great layout last year, even though it was a mud race. I’m looking forward to taking it all in.”
