Catalunya Moto2 2015 Results | Zarco Takes 2
Johan Zarco

The 2015 Moto2 Championship headed back to Spain for the second of four times this season, the action taking place at the tight and technical Catalunya-Barcelona Circuit.

The racing was intense from the opening lap when Moto2 points leader Ajo Motorsports Johann Zarco – the pole man – was stuffed after a close first-corner incident with Technomag Racing Interwetten’s Dominique Aegerter and AGR Team’s Jonas Folger.

But the Frenchman battled his way to the front of the grid by race’s end to earn his second win of 2015 Moto2. He was joined on the Catalunya Moto2 2015 podium by Paginas Amarillas HP 40’s Alex Rins and Marc VDS Racing’s Tito Rabat, the reigning Moto2 Champion.

Under beautiful conditions, Rabat earned the holeshot, and was soon joined by Speed Up Racing’s Sam Lowes and Aegerter up front. Soon Rins was in the podium fight, and Lowes was unable to match the pace for a podium.

The Frenchman Zarco was charging through the grid, eventually taking Lowes and catching Rabat and Rins with three laps remaining. Rins ran wide at turn four with two laps remaining, giving the lead to Rabat and second to Zarco. These two battled down to the final lap.

During that lap, Zarco made a block pass on Rabat for the lead. Rabat then ran wide at the crash-happy Turn 10, seeing his hopes for a 12th Moto2 win dissolve. Zarco was left alone, and he crossed the line unchallenged. Rins finished 0.426 of a second back, with Rabat crossing the line third, 1.115 seconds back.

Lowes held on for fourth ahead of Paginas Amarillas HP40’s Luis Salom and Derendinger Racing Interwetten’s Thomas Luthi.

Folger, who was also involved in the incident at the first corner that pushed him back to 14th, finished seventh. Rounding out the top 10 were Franco Morbidelli (Italtrans Racing Team), Dominique Aegerter (Technomag Racing Interwetten) and Lorenzo Baldassari (Athina Forward Racing).

There were crashes for Ricard Cardus, Robin Mulhauser, and Ratthapark Wilairot on his return to the Moto2™ class. Sandro Cortese and Xavier Simeon crashed out at turn 4 on the first lap, with an incident involving Morbidelli and Axel Pons (AGR Team) at the same corner.

After seven of 18 rounds, Zarco continues his dominance in the point standings. He now leads Rabat by 40 points, and Lowes by 54.

The Moto2 season now breaks for two weeks before heading to the Assen TT in the Netherlands.
