The 2015 Moto2 Championship headed to Europe for the first time this season, the action taking place at the Jerez circuit.

The reigning Moto2 Champion Esteve “Tito” Rabat was quick throughout free practice and qualifying, and claimed the pole for round four of Moto2. He carried this momentum into the race, but couldn’t sustain enough speed for the win.

Rabat led until 17 laps remained when he was passed by AGR Team’s Jonas Folger, who won the Moto2-season opener in Qatar. Folger ran smoothly, allowing him to take the victory by 1.931 seconds ahead of AJO Motorsports’s Johann Zarco, who took the win two weeks ago in Argentina. Rabat would have to settle for third after dealing with tire-wearing issues and a last-lap clash.

The Spaniard fought hard to earn third. He was in second until the last lap, and was observed sliding in every corner. Behind, Paginas Amarilas HP40’s Alex Rins and Zarco had caught up, the latter moving to fourth from ninth on the grid.

Approaching the final corner, Rins and Zarco closed in on Rabat. The battling was so intense that Rins made some contact with Rabat, and fell into the gravel trap.

Zarco also contacted Rabat as he quickly moved from fourth into second. Rabat was able to ride to third, and Rins remounted to finish 18th.

Finishing a lonely fourth was Derendinger Racing Interwetten’s Thomas Luthi (-6.833). Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 Kalex Xavier Simeon finished fifth, 11.086 seconds off the pace.

Rounding out the top 10 were Franco Morbidelli (Italtrans Racing Team), Luis Salom (Paginas Amarillas HP40), Simone Corsi (Athina Forward Racing), the reigning Moto3 Champion Alex Marquez (Marc VDS) and Marcel Schrotter (Tech 3).

QMMF Racig Team’s Julian Simon tool 11th, which was impressive considered he was forced to start at the back of a grid due to receiving a penalty form Race Direction for being 2kg under the weight limit during Qualifying.

The winner in Texas, Speed Up Racing’s Sam Lowes, struggled to 20th after experiencing major grip issues at Jerez.

After four of 18 rounds, Zarco now holds the points lead with 72, 16 ahead of Folger. Rins is in third with 49 points.

The 2015 Moto2 series now breaks for two weeks before heading to Le Mans in France.
