For the third time this season, Kawasaki Racing Team’s Tom Sykes has earned the Superpole win, qualifying his Kawasaki ZX-10R Ninja on the pole.

The 2013 World Superbike Champion took the top-qualifying position in record-breaking style, setting a new fastest lap of 1:34.214 en route to his third pole this season, and 27th of his SBK career.

Sykes will be joined on the front row for the start of Sunday’s two 21-lap races by Aprilia Racing Team – Red Devils Aprilia’s Leon Haslam and Aruba.it Racing – Ducati SBK Team’s Davide Giugliano. During Misano SBK Superpole, Haslam followed 0.212 of a second back, and Giugliano 0.228 of a second back. All together, the top 10 were within a second of Sykes.

“I am a little bit surprised to be win Superpole because I was not sure if my lap was good enough. But it was, so for this I am happy. I used a race tire, then a qualifier in Superpole 1 and finally we had to do three fast laps on the front tire,” Sykes says.

“I did a 1’34.9 on a race tire at one stage but the front tire had already done ten laps. The new track surface is good and the circuit is faster, and a better camber in some areas. We have had a good way of working through the weekend but we had to try a couple of different things and they did not work out. We got caught out because we did not put a fresh tire in during practice to check our performance over one lap. In a way it was good to do Superpole 1 because I got three extra flying laps in. At this level it gives you a bit more understanding, especially on fresh tires.”

Heading up row two in Misano SBK Superpole is the man who leads Sykes in the points race by 126 points – Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jonathan Rea. The Northern Irishman will be joined on row two by Aprilia Racing Team wildcard entry and two-time World SBK Champion Max Biaggi – who led Friday’s Misano SBK practice – and the other factory Aprilia RSV4 pilot, Jordi Torres.

Row three consists of Voltcom Crescent Suzuki’s Alex Lowes, BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini, and the reigning World SBK Champion, Pata Honda World SBK’s Sylvain Guintoli.
