Marc Coma makes it no secret that one of his strong points is riding across sand dunes. And he used this strenght garner the  stage-five win of 2015 Dakar Rally Thursday, which took riders through Chile’s treacherous Atacama Desert. Despite the tough conditions that naturally arrive with soft sand, rocks, and extreme heat, Coma was able to take a commanding win.

This was the four-time Dakar winners first stage win of 2015, and it allowed him to close the gap on the overall leader – Team HRC Honda’s Joan Barreda Bort.

These two Spaniards battled throughout the 433-mile stage that took riders through the Atacama Desert from Capiapo to Antofagasta – 285 of those miles were timed.

But Coma got the best of Barreda, finishing the timed special in four hours, 38 minutes and 16 seconds – 2:16 minutes ahead of the CRF450 Rally pilot. Taking the final-podium position was KTM-supported Pablo Quintanilla of Chile.

Coma reported that the “fesh-fesh” fine dust and rocks made it difficult to garner a rhythm during stage five. But Coma pressed on, taking the win.

“I am happy about the stage win but the fact is that Joan enjoys a significant advantage and we will try to trim it. There is still a lot of race left. The second part (of the rally) is longer with the marathon stages and it will be a fight every day. We are going in the right direction and we will keep fighting,” Coma says.

The KTM 450 Rally pilot now trails Barreda by 10:33 minutes in the overall general rankings.

Barreda has been consistent, and won two stages so far (two and four) as he chases his first Dakar title.

Speaking after stage four, Barreda says “It was good, I feel happy after all the day, a really tough day. It’s good, we had another great result. I finished with Marc. Overall, I’m happy. I’ll try to keep focused with the navigation and with the riding also. I suppose that now, with more experience, I know that when Marc is pushing he’s pushing all day. He goes really fast so it’s impossible to get in front, so it’s easier just to try and keep up with Marc.”

Quintanilla, who finished ahead of KTM-supported rider Stefan Svitko of Slovakia and Honda’s Paolo Conclaves of Portugal, also commented on his performance in stage five.

“Well, today was a very tough stage and a long one. I felt very good but in the last kilometres I got a bit tired. I’m happy to be in Antofagasta in front of our public and in our land, so I hope we have a good race,” Quintanilla says.

The British KTM rider Sam Sunderland suffered a crash during Wednesday’s stage four. He was forced to retire after incurring some ligament damage, but no other serious injuries, KTM reports.

Rounding out the top were Honda’s Helder Rodrigues, Honda’s Israel Esquerre, KTM’s Matthias Walkner – the stage-one winner – and Sherco’s Alain Duclos.

Friday’s stage six takes riders 428 miles from Antofagasta to Iquique in Chile, with 198 of those timed. The riders then get their only day of rest on Saturday.
