2014 Silverstone MotoGP Qualifying Results

The biggest news in MotoGP over the past two weeks was Marc Marquez’s loss at Brno MotoGP – his first after winning the opening 10 rounds.

But the Repsol Honda rider immediately went to work at Silverstone in the UK Friday at the opening day of free practice, leading the grid by over a half of second in both free practices.

And he carried this momentum into Saturday, leading the final two free practices and dominating qualifying. The 21-year-old Spaniard took his 10th pole of 2014 with a lap time of 2:00.829 – a new fastest lap at the Silverstone Circuit.

Joining Marquez on the front row for Sunday’s British Grand Prix is Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso, who qualified 0.311 of a second back, and Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Jorge Lorenzo, who was 0.0346 of a second back.

“It was a difficult qualifying session, because it was hard to get heat into the front t9re. However, I am happy with pole position –more than anything because of how comfortable I am feeling this weekend,” Marquez says.

“I am finding it easy to set a fast pace, and this is important at this track, which is bumpy and long. Let’s hope that we have a sunny day tomorrow, or at least that it doesn’t rain, and we will try to fight for the win right from the first lap.”

The top open-class rider, NGM Forward Racing Yamaha’s Aleix Espargaro, qualified on top of the third row. He will be joined by the only other winner in 2014 MotoGP – Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa (Brno MotoGP) and Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi.

The third row consists of the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 duo of Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro, and LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl, who crashed twice on Saturday.

Pramac Racing Ducati – and 2015 factory Ducati – pilot Andrea Ianonne also crashed, but qualified 10th on top of the third row. He will be joined by GO&FUN Honda Gresini teammates Scott Redding and Alvaro Bautista, respectively.

The American Nicky Hayden’s substitute on the Drive M7 Aspar – Leon Camier – crashed in qualify, but the Brit walked away unhurt, qualifying 18th.

The British Grand Prix gets underway around 9 a.m. ET Sunday, August 31. Fox Sports 1 will provide live coverage beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, which includes a rerun of Brno MotoGP.
