2014 Brno Moto3 Qualifying Results
Estrella Galicia 0,0 Honda’s Alex Marquez – the brother of MotoGP Champion Marc Marquez – took the pole Saturday for the Moto3 class in the Czech Grand Prix at Brno.
Marquez’s time of 2:07.691 was 0.223 sec. ahead of second-place qualifier Isaac Vinales (SPA) (Calvo Team KTM). Niccolo Antonelli (ITA) (Junior Team Go & Fun Moto3) completes the front row with time of 2:08.006.
Marquez is currently in third place in the title hunt with 133 points, behind Efren Vazquez with 137 points (SAXOPRINT RTG) who won the Red Bull Indianapolis event last week and Jack Miller (AUS) (Red Bull KTM Ajo) who leads the points with 158 but qualified sixth.
Marquez’s teammate, Alex Rins qualified fourth (2:08.051) and Miquel Oliviera (Mahindra Racing) qualified fifth 2’08.095. Rins is currently fifth in the series points (118), while Oliveira is eighth with 62 points.
MotoGP reports that the session was red flagged after a Philipp Oettl (Interwetten Paddock Moto3) crashed with just under ten minutes remaining. The rider was not injured but his bike was damaged and there was a delay whilst an air fence was repaired.
Before that red flag Alexis Masbou (Ongetta-Rivacold) was on provisional pole – at the 133rd Grand Prix of his long career – but ultimately qualified seventh behind Miller.
Efren Vazquez (SAXOPRINT RTG) and Enea Bastianini (Junior Team Go&FUN Moto3) qualified eighth and ninth respectively despite a late QP crash for Vazquez and a Friday spill for Bastianini which left him riding with a broken heel on Saturday.
Vazquez went down right at the end of the session, unable to continue as he fell heavily at turn 6. The Spanish rider who won at Indy was helped away by safety officials on foot, MotoGP reports.
