2014 Portimao Superbike FP1 Results

The eight round of the 2014 World Superbike Championship began Friday under extremely hot temperatures at Portimao in Portugal. And leading the first free practice session of the weekend was Aprilia Racing Team’s Marco Melandri.

The Italian – who doubled at Sepang and finished third in both races at Misano two weeks ago – posted a 1:43.880 around the 2.85-mile circuit.

To put this time into perspective, the lap record at the Portuguese circuit is a 1:42.475 set last year by the reigning World SBK Champion, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team).

When the 45-minute session wrapped up, Melandri finished 0.424 of a second ahead of teammate Sylvain Guintoli, and 0.593 ahead of Voltcom Crescent Suzuki’s Eugene Laverty.

The fourth-through-seventh finishers were all within a second of Melandri – Voltcom Crescent Suzuki’s Alex Lowes, Kawasaki Racing Team duo Loris Baz and Tom Sykes, and Pata Honda World Superbike’s Leon Haslam, respectively.

Haslam’s teammate Rea finished eight quickest, ahead of Ducati Superbike’s Chaz Davies and the top-EVO rider, BMW Motorrad Italia’s Sylvain Barrier.

A notable absence from the top 10 was Italian Ducati Superbike’s Davide Giugliano, who was plagued with electronic issues this morning, only managing 19th on the timing sheet.

Gabor Rizmayer made his BMW Team Toth debut replacing the injured Imre Toth. The Hungarian ended the session 24th overall. Bryan Staring suffered a technical problem with his Iron Brain Grillini Kawasaki, the Australian hopeful of making it back on track for today’s final session, FP2.
