A runner-up finish Saturday night at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif., padded GEICO Beta rider Cody Webb’s championship lead in the GEICO Motorcycle EnduroCross Series.

Through three events, Webb now leads five-time and reigning world champ Taddy Blazusiak by three points.

“We still have the red number plate,” Webb said of the point leader’s standard designation. “And we even gained a little in the standings, so all in all second place was a pretty good result for us.

“We have a couple months before the next race, so we’ll be able to ride this wave of confidence for a while. Maybe the intimidation of us having the red plate will start to wear on some of the other guys.”

Webb finished second to JCR Honda’s Colton Haaker, a longtime friend who, like Webb, hails from Northern California and had plenty of crowd support. Taking the final podium position was KTM’s Blazusiak.

“The main started awesome,” Webb said. “I got the holeshot and led the first few laps. I was getting a lot of pressure from Colton, and it was really hard to protect the inside line all the way around the track. There were just too many spots where you could sneak in and block-pass. I was probably being a little too safe and he got around me.

“I was ready to fight right back but made a little mistake and washed out the front end and went down. I got right up but had lost four or five seconds. I fought back from there and was closing the gap but we ran out of laps at the end. This is the first time we’ve ever run 15 laps in the main, and I think we were all gassed by the time we saw the checkers.”

Webb was in the spotlight all day. He qualified well early on, which put him in a great position for his heat, which he ended up winning with ease.

“Yeah, my heat race went really well,” Webb said. “I squeezed around (Mike) Brown early and just kind of rode away from there. It’s really nice when you have a safe heat race. You get a real boost of confidence heading into the main, knowing you’ve already done well on the track.

“We got up there for our hot lap to figure out gate picks for the main and Colton and I went at it again. It was pretty awesome that we ended up just a few hundreds apart. The crowd was definitely pushing me along. This is pretty close to home for me, so I rode their energy, for sure. I guess Colton did also.”

The GEICO Motorcycle EnduroCross Series resumes Aug. 23 at the Gwinnett Center in Atlanta. The race marks the tour’s first stop in Georgia.
