2014 Silverstone MotoGP Results
Spoiler Alert: 2014 MotoGP results from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone listed below
Following a two-week break, the 2014 MotoGP Championship continued this past weekend at Silverstone for the Hertz British Grand Prix.
From day one at Silverstone – Friday Free Practice – the reigning MotoGP Champion Marc Marquez dominated. Looking to return to the top following his only loss this season at Brno MotoGP two weeks ago, the Repsol Honda rider was untouchable during free practice, leading all four sessions Friday and Saturday.
The 21-year-old Spaniard carried this momentum into Saturday’s qualifying, taking his 10th pole of the season. Joining him on the front row in qualifying were Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizoso and Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Jorge Lorenzo.
Ahead of Sunday’s British GP, Marquez led warmup ahead of Lorenzo. These two would then battle for the entire 20 laps at the 3.666-mile Silverstone Circuit – similar to what happened in 2013 MotoGP.
But unlike last season when Lorenzo won the battle, Marquez would finish first. This was his 11th win in 12 races, Marquez beating Lorenzo by 0.732 of a second. Taking the final podium was Lorenzo’s teammate, Valentino Rossi.
“I’m very happy with this win! I expected the race to be slightly different, given what happened in practice yesterday, but today with higher temperatures it seems that both Jorge [Lorenzo] and Valentino [Rossi] took a step forward,” Marquez says.
“Above all, Jorge, because he had a great pace and we were fighting right to the end. It was important to win today, after missing out at Brno. I also had a score to settle from last year, when Jorge beat me on the final corner, so I am happy to be back on the top step of the podium!”
When the race began, Lorenzo got out front ahead of Marquez, and the two immediately broke away from the remaining grid. Behind, a battle ensued for third between Rossi, Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa – the only other winner this season – and Dovizioso.
Marquez battled with Lorenzo, and took the lead with seven laps remaining. But he would make a few mistakes, which dropped him back to second. Marquez regained his rhythm, and with three laps remaining, he took the lead.
Marquez didn’t make any mistakes this time, and took the checkered flag ahead of Lorenzo.
Rossi finished third, 8.519 seconds behind Marquez. Besides taking his seventh podium finish of 2014 MotoGP, Rossi also completed his 246th Grand Prix race at 34-years old, making him the most experienced rider in GP history.
“I’m happy for the podium. It’s the first time here at Silverstone and usually this is a very difficult track for me. I am very happy about my pace at the beginning, because Jorge was in front and pushing a lot, so the lap times were very fast,” the nine-time World Champion Rossi says.
“I was able to stay with them for the first laps, but unfortunately I had already a small gap when I was behind Dovizioso. To try and catch them I stressed the rear tire too much, so I had too slow my rhythm and from that moment I started a very hard battle with Dani and Dovi to the end.
“I decided to stay in front because I had a quite good pace and I could arrive on the podium. We have a lot of positive things. We have another podium. On the other side, I wanted to stay behind Marc and Jorge throughout the race. We have to do another step to prepare 100 percent for Misano in two weeks, because that will be my home Grand Prix and we will have to do more than the maximum.”
Pedrosa took fourth following a battle with Dovizioso. Pedrosa would beat Dovi to the line for fourth by a mere 0.175 of a second.
Another huge battle occurred for sixth place between Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Pol Espargaro and LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl. Espargaro would win the battle, continuing his impressive results as a rookie.
Rounding out the top 10 were Pramac Racing Ducati’s Andrea Iannone, NGM Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro, and the top British finisher, GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Scott Redding.
As for the other Brits, Ducati Team’s Cal Crutchlow finished 12th, and Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Bradley Smith finished 22nd after having issues with his YZR-M1.
The substitute for the American Nicky Hayden on the Drive M7 Aspar Honda RCV1000R – Leon Camier – finished 16th, over a minute off the pace. The only rider to crash out was GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista.
With his win, Marquez now has 288 points, 89 ahead of Pedrosa. Rossi is in third, 99 points back.
The series now breaks for another two weeks before heading to San Marino for the Misano Grand Prix; the action gets underway with free practice Friday, September 12.
