Five local brain-tumor survivors – Jocelyn, Tristan, Heaven, Mackenzie and Lauranda – were honored Sunday, Oct. 27, at the inaugural Ride for Kids in San Antonio, Texas.
The ride, which benefits the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, helped raise $23,072 to help eliminate the challenge of childhood brain tumors.
Lauranda says: “Every day, (we) hug each other because we don’t know what tomorrow brings,” Lauranda said. “We are so thankful for all of you riders because you embrace us like we are family and we feel at home.”
About 235 people attended the ride, which started on a cloudy, warm morning at Retama Park in Selma, Texas.
The individual, motorcycle club/chapter and motorcycle business with the most raised were Russ Locke ($2,534), Ladies on Wheels San Antonio ($9,931), and Alamo Cycle Plex ($8,489). The top non-motorcycle group was Greg Stith Memorial Ride ($2,534).
Sydney Dale Barnes won the drawing for a new Honda CBR250R and Andy Fife won a Bell motorcycle helmet.
Ride for Kids thanks the hardworking volunteers who organized the event. The 2013 task force leaders were Debra Wickham and Brenda Thiele.
The event is still collecting donations online at www.rideforkids.org. Fundraisers will receive incentive credit through Nov. 27.
