Silverstone MotoGP Qualifying 2013 | Marquez Earns Pole

2013 Silverstone MotoGP Qualifying Results

For the fifth time of 2013 MotoGP – just as many races as he won – Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez has secured the pole position.

His latest arrived Saturday at Silverstone, which was moved from a typical June meeting to September, creating faster times due to warmer afternoon temperatures.

The 20-year-old rookie piloted his RC213V to a record-breaking 2:00.691 around the 3.6-mile circuit featuring 18 corners. To put this time into perspective, the Best Pole and Fastest Lap records were a 2:02.020 set in 2011 by Marquez’s predecessor on the Repsol Honda, Casey Stoner.

Joining Marquez on the front row will be his fellow Spanish countryman, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo, and the home favorite, Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Cal Crutchlow. The latter put in a very impressive performance, considering he crashed twice during free practice 3 earlier in the day.

Marquez was a mere 0.128 of a second quicker than the reigning MotoGP Champion Lorenzo, who led Friday’s practice sessions. A further 0.734 of a second back was Crutchlow. The Brit had trouble keeping up with the front runners, showing the impressive speeds of Lorenzo and Marquez.

Only the top five riders were within a second of Marquez – LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl qualified fourth on top of the second row, 0.867 of a second behind Marquez, and Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa fifth, 0.933 of a second behind. Taking the final position on the second row was Yamaha Factory Racing’s Valentino Rossi.

The third row will be headed up by Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso. The ITalian will be joined by GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista, who took the pole at last year’s Silverstone round, and the other Ducati Team rider, Nicky Hayden.

Completing the top 10 was Curtchlow’s teammate Bradley Smith. Top CRT qualifying honors went to NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Colin Edwards appeared in Q2 for the third successive event and achieves his best qualifying result of the year.

CRT counterpart Aleix Espargaro was absent from Q2 following a crash in final practice; having injured his neck and the fourth finger of his left hand, the Power Electronics Aspar rider’s race participation will now be subject to a Sunday medical check-up.

Cardion AB Motoracing’s Karel Abraham is not at Silverstone, having elected to skip the race in order to recover from injuries picked up in an Indianapolis crash.

The 2013 Hertz British Grand Prix begins at 1 p.m. local time (GMT +1) on Sunday, coming after the Moto2™ race but before Moto3™, as was also the case at Brno.
