2012 Aragon World Superbike Results Video
When Spain’s Motorland Aragon’s second year on the 2012 World Superbike calendar wrapped up Sunday, one rider was able to extend his points lead following a race-one win – Max Biaggi.
Once the Aprilia RSV4 rider got out front during the first race, he began pulling away from the field. But it wouldn’t be a runaway win. By mid race, BMW Motorrad’s Marco Melandri began a fierce battle with Biaggi that would go down to the final laps.
After swapping the lead many times, Biaggi would make the pass stick on the penultimate lap, and cross the finish line 0.278 of a second ahead of Melandri. Taking third behind Biaggi and Melandri, who both shared a win a piece during 2011 Aragon World SBK, would be Althea Ducati’s Carlos Checa.
The second race was just as intense, and quickly became a four-rider battle for the checkered flag between Melandri, Biaggi, Aprilia Racing’s Eugene Laverty and ParkinGO Aprilia’s Chaz Davies.
But Melandri would hold off the three Aprilia RSV4 superbikes for the win. Joining the Italian on the podium would be Laverty and Davies. Biaggi would finish fourth.
With his race-one win, which was his fourth this season and third straight victory, and fourth-place finish at Aragon, Biaggi has 248.5 points, 48 ahead of Melandri. Honda World Superbike’s Jonathan Rea, who had a 16-5 finish at Aragon, is in third with 183 points.
