2012 Assen World Superbike Video
The 2012 World Superbike Championship headed to the Netherlands this past weekend for round 3 of 14 at the Assen TT Circuit.
And with the round arrived many challenges due to rain storms plaguing the area. The rain halted optimal traction Friday, Saturday and Sunday, eventually causing a red flag during race 1.
That shortened race was won by Team Effenbert-Liberty Ducati’s Sylvain Guintoli. The race-1 win was Guintoli’s first-ever in World Superbike, and he was joined on the podium by the Althea Ducati duo of Davide Giugliano and Carlos Checa, respectively.
In race 2, the track began drying out, though some riders, including the reigning World SBK Champion Checa, were on rain tires. Honda World Superbike’s Jonathan Rea would take the win, which was his fourth victory at Assen in the past six races held there.
The Northern Irishman was joined on the podium by Guintoli and Aprilia Racing’s Eugene Laverty, respectively. As for Checa, he finished 17th.
Although Aprilia Racing’s Max Biaggi finished 4-8 at Assen WSBK, he regained the points lead. Biaggi now has 92 points, and is trailed one-point behind by Checa. Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes, who had the pole at Assen, is in third with 76 points.
