2012 World Superbike Championship

Spoiler Alert: 2012 World Superbike results from Monza listed below

Race action at the fourth round of the 2012 World Superbike Championship was affected by rain Sunday.

The wet conditions caused a red flag on lap three of the first race, and ultimately a cancellation. In race 2, the rain caused a red flag on lap 8, which also canceled the race. Due to the grid only performing half of the race, only half of the points were awarded.

And during that race, Kawasaki Racing Team’s Tom Sykes took his first win of 2012 World SBK, and his second with the team (first race win was in Nurburgring, 2011).

When the Monza World SBK race 2 began, Sykes immediately set an unmatched pace on the drying track. When the race was red flagged and completed at the half-way point, Sykes would take the win by 9.709 seconds ahead of Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport). Taking the final podium position was Aprilia Racing Team’s Eugene Laverty.

Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) was a close fourth and another local great, Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team), was fifth, followed by Honda World Superbike’s Jonathan Rea and Althea Racing Ducati’s Carlos Checa. The distance between second to seventh place was covered by just over a second in a close contest behind Sykes.

Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing ZX-10R Superbike: “My second win for Kawasaki but my first this year and it was nice to get that one under the belt. It is a shame that it is only half points but we put on a good show in eight laps and I hope I put on a good show for the Italian fans. This was my first podium at Monza so that is good and the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R has been working fantastically well.

“Conditions have often been very bad so there has been a lot of talk and other things going on but it has been my job to keep focused. From the green light the feedback on my bike was fantastic and I was able to go about my business in a good way and keep out of trouble. I had a great start and got myself into the lead and as Elvis once said, ‘It’s now or never.’ We went for it and every lap the bike was getting better, the track conditions better and I was confident with our package today that we could do a good race distance.”

With four of 14 rounds complete, Biaggi continues to lead the 2012 World SBK Championship with 97.5 points. But only two points behind is Althea Ducati’s Carlos Checa. Sykes resides in third with 91.5 points.
