2011 MotoGP
For the eighth time in the 2011 MotoGP Championship, Casey Stoner has qualified his Repsol Honda RC212V in the most optimal position – first.
The Australian not only grabbed the pole position for Sunday’s San Marino Grand Prix at Misano, he also broke his own lap record, which he set at the 2.6-mile circuit in 2008. Stoner piloted the RC212V to a 1:33.138.
But not far behind was the reigning MotoGP Champion Jorge Lorenzo, the Yamaha Factory Racing rider 0.120 of a second off Stoner’s pole time. Taking the final spot on the front row will be Stoner’s teammate, Dani Pedrosa, who trailed Lorenzo by 0.60 of a second.
Heading up the second row is Lorenzo’s teammate Ben Spies, the American posting a 1:33.947 aboard the other factory Yamaha M1. He will be joined by San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli and the third and final Repsol Honda rider, Andrea Dovizioso.
Starting on the third row will be Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Colin Edwards. The American will be joined by two Spaniards – Alvaro Bautista aboard the Rizla Suzuki GSV-R, and Hector Barbera aboard the Mapfre Aspar Ducati GP11.
As for nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi, the Italian placed the Ducati GP11.1 in 11th, 1.538 seconds off Stoner’s time.
