2011 MotoGP
For the first time in the 2011 MotoGP Championship, Valentino Rossi topped the time sheets.
Although it was only the warm-up practice for today’s Assen TT, Round 7 of the MotoGP Championship, Rossi’s times were impressive in the session that began dry and ended wet; the Italian piloted his Ducati GP11.1, an updated version of his prototype, to a 1:41.263, which was a over four seconds quicker than his former teammate’s time, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo.
Third fastest behind Valentino Rossi, who qualified 11th on the grid, went to Lorenzo’s Yamaha Factory Racing teammate Ben Spies, who will start from second behind pole-sitter Marco Simoncelli. Rounding out the top five were Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) and Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda).
MotoGP reports: “A misty drizzle began just after the start of the premier class warm up, which made tire choice and set up a difficult decision, as riders entered and exited the boxes several times for changes to both. With six minutes to go as many as six riders had not completed a full lap. Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) and Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda), who start from first and third place in the grid, only appeared on the track at the end of the session to complete a total of three laps each.”
