2011 Assen MotoGP

In an extended Free Practice 2 Friday due to the cancellation of the original session scheduled for Thursday, Marco Simoncelli again set the pace ahead of qualifying, the San Carlo Honda Gresini pilot posting a 1:36.149.

Simoncelli, who was fastest in Thursday’s wet FP1 session, just beat out the current MotoGP points’ leader, Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner, by 0.193 of a second. The man who has won four of six races so far in the 2011 MotoGP Championship was followed closely by Yamaha Factory Racing’s Ben Spies, who was 0.067 of a second slower than Stoner.

These quick times were set in the first-half of the 1:30-hour session when the track was cold but dry; the later part of Free Practice 2 at Assen was plagued with rain.

Spies’ teammate Jorge Lorenzo was 0.596 of a second slower than Stoner, and the reignign MotoGP Champion was the last to post under the 1:37 mark.

Ducati Team’s Valentino Rossi, who was second fastest at Assen on Thursday, was the fifth fastest, 0.502 of a second behind his former teammate. Rossi is currently competing on the updated GP11.1.

Unusual, the three Repsol Honda riders – Stoner, Andrea Dovizioso and Hiroshi Aoyama (filling in for Pedrosa) – all had crasehs within three minutes of each other at the start of the dry session. They all re-entered the session, but Dovi would finish eighth finish, Aoyama in 15th.
