Rea: Superbike Crash & Injury Update

After crashing around 130 mph Tuesday at Phillip Island, it was unknown if Jonathan Rea would be starting at the World Superbike season opener in Phillip Island this weekend.

But after receiving a medical checkup, Castrol Honda’s Rea was cleared from serious injury due to the superbike crash. The 24-year-old Northern Irishman reported he’s hopeful of returning to the track this weekend for the first of 13 WSBK.

Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda Superbike) says: "The bike spat me off really hard, something like a 130mph crash but the most worrying thing was the possibility of aggravating the old injury to my hand, with my scapho-lunate ligament.

"But all the X-rays and CT scans have shown that there are no fractures to my wrist but maybe a fracture to the edge of my left collarbone, which I hope is a previous injury. I hope we can get out of here today and line up on the grid for practice on Friday to see how it goes.

"I am really optimistic because I have a range of movement in both my hands, which seemed to bear the brunt of the crash. If we can keep the swelling down to the minimum, and get on the bike without too much discomfort I will be out on the grid on Sunday trying as hard as ever."

Moments after posting the third overall quickest time at the final pre-season World Superbike test at Phillip Island, Jonathan Rea crashed his Castrol Honda CBR1000RR at Turn 3.

The Ten Kate Honda team’s report states oil leaked onto the superbike’s rear tire from the motor, which caused a fire on the Honda. Due to the fire, Rea was forced to jump from his Honda Superbike at about 130 mph, and subsequently dislocated his left ring finger and experience pain in his left wrist.

Rea was taken to the clinic at the track where X-Rays were performed, but no bones were reported broken.

Rea finished in third position overall, 0.7 of a second behind the test leader Carlos Checa (Althea Ducati 1198R) and 0.1 of a second behind Sylvain Guintoli (Effenbert – Liberty Racing Ducati 1198R). Rea’s fastest lap aboard the Honda was a 1:31.206.
