For 2011, the Yamaha Factory SBK Team will come to battle with Englishman Eugene Laverty riding alongside Italian Marco Melandri on the R1 superbike.

Benefiting from the influence of Yamaha M1 MotoGP technology, the current generation of the World Superbike Championship winning YZF-R1 represents development in engine and chassis technology that has been pasted down from the legendary Valentino Rossi motorcycle.

Featuring a revolutionary crossplane crankshaft engine and unique uneven firing order, the production model of the 2011 Yamaha YZF R1 superbike delivers near linear torque providing smoother acceleration and greater levels of grip.

Modifications to the R1 World Superbike for racing from the homologated model include a modified cam-shaft, an enlarged radiator for extra cooling and the addition of an oil cooler. The Yamaha R1 has no rear sub-frame but incorporates a strengthened frame.

The SBK exhaust is unique, and was developed alongside pipe-maker Akrapovic. The stock R1 fuel tank has also been replaced with a carbon fiber tank with an increased capacity, this still falls within FIM World SBK regulations.

The Yamaha R1 Superbike features the latest Magneti Marelli (MHT) electronic systems with over 20 sensors on the motorcycle to monitor variables in braking, suspension and speed etc. The swing arm is also developed purely for the World SBK race bike.
