Indy Moto2 Wildcard: Hayden, Schwantz

Moto2 News

American Honda will participate in the Moto2 Class at the 2010 Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP this August, with the legendary Kevin Schwantz leading the team, and Roger Lee Hayden piloting the Honda-powered Moriwaki MD 600.

Kevin Schwantz says “It’s an honor for me to be chosen as team manager. We’ve been using CBR600RRs for some time now at our schools, and I’ve ridden a Moto2 bike and it’s very good. I watched the first three Moto2 races and I expect the racing to be just as good at Indy.”

The 1993 World Champion, who runs the Schwantz School at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, brings much racing knowledge to the team staffed by Erion Racing technicians. And Schwantz’s rider has much experience on the CBR600RR, and has also took the 2007 AMA Supersport championship aboard a 600cc machine. Plus, he has some experience in MotoGP. In 2007, he rode as a wildcard entry during the U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca on a factory Kawasaki, finishing in 10th.

Hayden is currently racing with Team Pedercini Kawasaki in World Superbike, but hasn’t had much luck, only garnering two points in the championship with a best-place finish of 14th. But his experience in the states, and the Kentuckian’s fans, will provide some extra driving force at Indy. Plus, his brother Nicky Hayden will be running the same event in the premier class on the No. 69 Marlboro Ducati.

Roger, 27, just made the cut for the wildcard entry; Moto2 rules require all wildcard riders to be 28 years old or younger.

Rogery Lee Hayden says “This is a great opportunity for me to race in front of my home crowd at a MotoGP event,” said Roger, who is currently competing in the World Superbike Championship. “The Moto2 class is really competitive and I’m looking forward to jumping in the middle of it.”

Getting everything in proper working order will be Erion Racing technicians, led by Kevin Erion. The staff has been America Honda’s premier support team for over 15 years, winning 16 national champions.

Kevin Erion says “We’re excited to partner with American Honda again and participate in our first World-Championship event.”

The American Honda Indy GP Moto2 team will also benefit the Ride for Kids(r) (RFK) program and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation(r) (PBTF) through special fund-raising activities.

At Indy, for example, Schwantz will lead the Lap of Champions, where 300 participants will join him in a lap around the track in a special fund-raiser that benefits the PBTF by raising funds to promote childhood brain tumor research.

The Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix will take place at the 2.62-mile circuit on August 29
