The numbers are staggering-76 MotoGP wins, 14 victories at the Isle of Man, 10 World Championships-but the most storied of “Mike The Bike” Hailwood’s achievements may be his 1978 victory in the Formula 1 class at the Isle of Man TT. Ending an 11-year absence from motorcycle racing, the 38-year-old Hailwood stunned the world on a Sports Motorcycles Ducati 900TT1 (read about Alan Cathcart’s ride on the 900TT1 in our Aug/Sept 2007 issue).
To commemorate Hailwood’s astounding triumph, NCR of Bologna, Italy has built a dozen motorcycles in tribute. Endorsed by the Estate of Mike Hailwood, and the Isle of Man Dept. of Tourism and Leisure, the individually numbered NCR Mike Hailwood TTs will be delivered at the 2009 Tourist Trophy event. At least one will be entered in competition.
Not a retro bike, the NCR Mike Hailwood TT features such modern exotica as an 11-pound titanium frame, Öhlins MotoGP-based FGR 900 forks, plus carbon fiber bodywork and wheels. Powering the bike is a Ducati-based 1120cc NCR powerplant with a billet crankshaft, and titanium tapped for the connecting rods, valves and exhaust system. A new NCR-EFI Euro 1 engine management system delivers the air/fuel mixture.
The result is a bike claimed to weigh less than 300 pounds, ably propelled by 130 horsepower at 8700 rpm and nearly 100 ft/lbs of torque at 7000 rpm. Given that Hailwood’s TT-winning Ducati produced a mere 87 horsepower, this is certainly a worthy homage.
