Wet weather and salt conditions at the Bonneville Salt Flats continue to bedevil the planned assault on the motorcycle world land speed record by the Triumph-powered Castrol Rocket.

Its appearance at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials in August was scuttled by the shortening of the long (11 mile) course to 7 miles due to wet conditions and iffy weather.

The alternative of running at Mike Cook’s Shootout scheduled for the Bonneville Salt Flats in early September has also been scotched by the same factors, but Triumph and the constructors of the Castrol Rocket, Carpenter Racing and Hot Rod Conspiracy have announced plans to reschedule the attempt for October 5-10.

“This is part of the challenge of land speed competition,” said Matt Sheahan, Chief Operating Officer for Triumph Motorcycles America. “Everything needs to align, especially the weather. In this case, we were not so fortunate, but Triumph hopes that the weather breaks long enough and affords us the opportunity to return to Bonneville at the beginning of October.”

The Castrol Rocket is powered by two modified Triumph Rocket III motorcycle engines producing an estimated 1,000 hp and 500 lb/ft of torque. Professional motorcycle racer, Jason DiSalvo will pilot the machine in its attempt.
