2014 James Stewart JS7 News

When the 2014 Monster Energy Supercross headed into the penultimate round at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. – a first for the series – only two riders had a realistic chance of taking the title from Ryan Villopoto.

These two riders were Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, and the rider who was within 48 points of the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Villopoto, Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart.

But the Floridan’s championship hopes were crushed on the third lap of the main event when the RM-Z 450 pilot tweaked his knee on the third lap of the main event. This caused him to watch from the sidelines as Villopoto clinched his fourth-straight title.

And the two-time Supercross Champion Stewart’s performance was clean during the opening sessions; he put two solid qualifying sessions and finished second in is heat race.

“This was a bummer,” said Yoshimura Suzuki Team Manager Mike Webb. “James was about fourth into the first turn but then he got shuffled around and came out about ninth. Then he worked his way up and was going for fourth when he went into the off-camber turn and lost the front end and planted his leg.

“He twisted his knee pretty good and so he pulled off. It’s a pretty bad twist but we don’t know the extent right now, so we’re going to get it checked-out next week. Hopefully, we’ll be good to go. Right now, we’re keeping our fingers crossed and looking forward to getting ready for Motocross.”

The team now heads to the season finale at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium May 3.
