Antonio Cairoli has completed the task once again, the Italian winning yet another FIM MX1 World Championship.
The news arrived for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider following a win in the first race at British Grand Prix, though he suffered a DNF in the second race due to mechanical problems.
But he had secured enough points to clinch the title with one round (Dutch Grand Prix at Lierop) remaining. Following the British Grand Prix, Cairoli had 718 points, 71 ahead of Suzuki’s Clement Desalle, who won the second race in the UK.
This was Cairoli’s seventh FIM Motocross title, which includes five in the MX1 class, and his fourth title aboard a KTM.
Through his FIM MX career, the 27-year-old Italian has earned 63 victories, and is 38 away from the record held by Stefan Evert (101_.
Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM SX-F 350) says: “It is very special to win another Title with KTM because they have always been behind me. Every Title is different; of course the first Title is the one I remember the most, but all of them are special. Since my mum passed away all the titles are for her and that keeps me motivated to keep on winning.”
The 2013 FIM Motocross Championship began on a sour note for Cairoli when Desalle took the red plate at the first GP in Qatar. But at the following Thai GP, Cairoli took the lead, and remained consistent throughout the season. To date, he has taking six poles, won nine grand prixs and only missed the podium at the Czech Republic.
Antonio Cairoli says: “The season went really well, actually it was easier than what I expected because in the beginning there was a lot of talking around that it would be difficult, but I rode well, my rivals made some mistakes and I could take some advantage.”
As said before, this was Cairoli’s fourth title with the KTM SX-F 350, showing the dominance of the Austrian brand. KTM has also claimed both MX1 and MX2 World Titles for the fourth time in a row, the first one arriving in 2010 with Marvin Musquin and Antonio Cairoli.
