Jorge Lorenzo talks MotoGP 2010

Fiat Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo does not feel it is essential that he become world champion in 2010.

The 22-year-old Spaniard enjoyed a fierce battle with legendary team-mate Valentino Rossi during the 2009 FIM MotoGP World Championship campaign, but mid-season crashes at the British and Czech Grands Prix helped the Italian eventually claim the crown by 45 points.

But, Lorenzo doesn’t feel that missing out on the title again next year would be a failure. Jorge recently was quoted by Gazzetta dello Sport:

"Many perhaps expect me to win the title [in 2010], but what happens if I don’t?

"This is an extremely difficult series, and on top of that it’s a time of great riders. Second place is already a fine result.

"Look at (Dani) Pedrosa: he’s been in MotoGP for four years, but he still hasn’t triumphed. To do that, you need to have every aspect sorted out.

"It will be difficult in 2010 because [Casey] Stoner has returned stronger than ever, Pedrosa may have a more competitive Honda, and Valentino is always there – he will be 31, that’s true, but he isn’t old at all. I want to be there with them."

The former two-time 250cc world champion has also played down the significance of the wall that separates Rossi and himself in the Yamaha garage.

"In my opinion it changes nothing," Lorenzo said. "We are two very strong riders mentally, with firm ideas, and it would be the same without the wall."
