The Japan Automobile Manufacturer’s Association (JAMA) released statistical data regarding the number of motorcycles exported and produced in the country for the month of May, 2011.

As the Japan continues to recover from the March 11 Earthquake, motorcycle exports were on the decline, though production numbers have increased 10.2 percent compared to May of 2010.

Japan Motorcycle Production, May 2011

Motorcycle production in May 2011 was recorded as 53,105 units. Compared with the 48,192 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is an increase of 4,913 units or 10.2 percent, and production increase on the same month of the previous year after four months of downturn.

May 2011 Motorcycle Production Figures by Class

  • 50cc or under 14,975 units, up 4,975 units or 49.8%
  • 51 – 125cc 6,211 units, up 2,126 units or 52.0%
  • 126 – 250cc 5,969 units, down 829 units or 12.2%
  • Over 250cc 25,950 units, down 1,359 units or 5.0%

Number of Motorcycle Domestic Sales

Domestic sales (factory shipment) in May 2011 stood at 34,567 units, an increase of 15.6% as compared with the same month of the previous year.

  • 50cc or under 24,781 units, up 15.6%
  • 51 – 125cc 5,275 units, up 13.4%
  • 126 – 250cc 2,664 units, up 49.4%
  • Over 250cc 1,847 units, down 8.4%

Motorcycle Export Data for May 2011

Motorcycle export in May 2011 was recorded as 33,946 units. Compared with the 35,491 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is a decrease of 1,545 units or 4.4%, and export decrease on the same month of the previous year for four consecutive months.

  • 50cc or under class 1,147 units, up 823 units or 254.0%
  • 51 – 125cc class 2,907 units, down 245 units or 7.8%
  • 126 – 250cc class 3,814 units, up 514 units or 15.6%
  • Over 250cc class 26,078 units, down 2,637 units or 9.2%

Value of Motorcycles Exported

Total value of motorcycles exported for May 2011 was $313.32 million including $216.94 million for vehicles and $96.38 million for parts. This is a decrease of $40.045 million or 11.3% as compared with $353.365 million recorded for the same month of the previous year.
