2014 Dakar Rally | Despres Wins Stage 12, Coma Extends Lead

As the 2014 Dakar Rally headed into the penultimate stage Friday, only Joan Barreda Bort had a realistic shot at taking the lead off Red Bull KTM’s Marc Coma.

But the Team HRC Honda CRF 450 Rally pilot, who won four stages so far in 2014 Dakar, suffered mechanical issues in stage 12, bringing his overall deficit of 52 minutes to over three hours.

Barreda dropped to seventh overall due to his troubles (he finished 63rd in stage 12), allowing Red Bull KTM’s Jordi Viladoms to slip into second. But Viladoms is far behind his teammate Coma; with one stage remaining, Coma is almost two hours ahead of Viladoms. This lead also includes a 15-minute penalty Coma suffered for changing the engine on his KTM’s engine Thursday evening.

Things can change quickly, but from the looks of both Coma’s performance and the mechanical condition of his KTM 450 Rally, the Spaniard will likely take a fourth Dakar title Saturday as the rally ends in Valparaiso, Chile.

Coma added to his lead by finishing stage 12 Friday in second, 2 minutes 17 seconds behind five-time Dakar winner Cyril Despres. The Frenchman Despres – who finished the 434-mile stage that took riders from El Salvador to La Serena, Chile, in 3 hours 58 minutes 18 seconds – has little chance of winning the overall rally, considering he trails his former teammate Coma by more than 2 hours.

This was the Red Bull Yamaha YZF 450 pilot’s 33rd career stage win – and second of 2014 –  as he battled with Coma in the dunes of Copiapo. If Coma takes the 2014 Dakar Rally, it will be KTM’s 13th straight title.

Speaking of the stage, the official Dakar report says “second to start this morning behind Coma, the title holder Despres quickly caught up with the Catalan and overtook him to open the way, followed by the current general standings leader, riding to protect his advantage at the end of the rally.

“Behind them, the day’s big loser was Joan Barreda, second in the general standings on departure from El Salvador this morning. Following electrical problems on his Honda, the Spaniard had to stop several times from the 265-km point onwards and crossed the finishing line on foot, 2:29’35 after Despres! His misfortunes smiled on Olivier Pain, the third quickest today, 5’57’ behind the stage winner, but also Helder Rodrigues, fourth to finish, 7’21” behind Despres, and Jordi Viladoms, fifth placed 9’10” behind the day’s fastest man.”

2014 Dakar Stage 12 Quotes:

Marc Coma (Red Bull KTM 450 Rally) says: “Today was a very long stage, 350 km. We finished in the Copiapo dunes. This means it is always tough, difficult and not easy for navigating. From the past we know that normally this stage is decisive.

“So now I’m here, I’m happy of course. We stayed together with Cyril all day and we arrived at the end without any big problems. Of course, there are always some small mistakes and we had to find the way point. For tomorrow, there is still 150 km and this is a lot. It’s like I’m fighting for myself to be focused, to push every day and just follow the way that brings me here. So I’ll carry on like that.”

Jordi Viladoms (Red Bull KTM 450 Rally) says: “You can never say it’s over when there is still a special to be ridden. There are still a fair amount of kilometres to be covered… But it’s obvious that I’m very happy with what I’ve done up until now.

“As for Joan [Barreda] I don’t know where he is. I saw him repairing on the side of the tracks and I don’t know if he will be able to finish in time… we’ll see. For the moment, I’m third and tomorrow anything can still happen. In any case, I’m very happy with the work that all the team has put in. If we can improve on our position, then it’s a bonus and so much the better!”

Cyril Despres (Red Bull Yamaha YZF 450 RallY) says: “It was a nice stage. Quite fast at the beginning, a lot of rocks also and then not that easy navigation on the last part. I’m pretty happy to navigate and I really enjoyed the day a lot, which is really important.”

Olivier Pain (Yamaha YZF 450 Rally) says: “15 km from the finishing line, I was surprised by a bumpy part on a descent. In a bend, I can’t have had perfect balance and I was thrown of the bike. I bent my handlebars and it made riding a bit complicated afterwards, which led to me falling again.

“I’ve hurt my inner thigh a little, but all in all, I’m still here and I haven’t lost too much time to Cyril. It was a little mistake which won’t have any consequences for the rest of the rally I hope. I didn’t want to give anything away. It’s a pity to be caught out by a moment’s carelessness. The race can change quickly!”
