The Legendary Buffalo Chip has just announced that closing out this year’s Sturgis Rally Week festivities will be American rock band legend, The Doobie Brothers. Scheduled for Saturday, August 14, the rock and roll superstars will be topping off nine days of raucous musical performances and is expected to bring in the biggest closing Saturday night in Buffalo Chip history.
One of the most popular California pop/rock bands of the ’70’s, the Doobie Brothers successfully evolved from a mellow boogie band to a polished and genuine soul-inflected pop band that has successfully weathered four decades of the American music scene. The musical styling of this renowned ensemble can be described as rock edge combined with lush vocal harmonies that combine to create exciting live performances and skillful musicianship. But even the band itself prefers not to define their music thereby not limiting themselves stylistically.
Past hits range in style from the bluesy rock of "Long Train Runnin" to the country tinged "Black Water" to the gospel/jazz rooted "Taking it to the Streets". Other famed Doobie Brothers hits include "Listen to the Music", "Jesus is Just Alright", and "China Grove". Since their origin the group has racked up a string of gold and platinum albums and has sold over 30 million albums in the United States alone. In addition, The Doobie Brothers were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004.
It has been 20 years since the Doobie Brothers last graced the Buffalo Chip amphitheatre stage when they helped celebrate the rally’s 50th anniversary and chipsters are ecstatic that they’ll be back in town to ring in the rally’s 70th. Since their early days touring biker bars in Northern California, the Doobie Brothers have attracted a particularly strong following starting with the San Francisco Bay motorcycle community. Since that time their fan base has widened, however, bike enthusiasts are still among their most loyal supporters.
Another important anniversary will be celebrated while the Doobies visit the Chip. It was 20 years ago that Doobie Brothers guitarist, Patrick Simmons met biker journalist, Cristine Sommer at the Buffalo Chip during Sturgis Bike Week. Both avid motorcycle enthusiasts, Cris and Patrick have been riding together ever since.
