Dakar… Silk Way Rally 2010

Russian Rally

The second Silk Way Rally, under the « Dakar Series » banner, will be held in Russia from September 11-19. In conjunction with the beginning of the inscription period, an official presentation of the rally will be held on April 15 in Saint-Petersburg.

The success of the 2009 Silk Way Rally has prompted the Russian government to make a significant and long term commitment to the sport of rally-raid with a five year project.

At the end of a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Vladimir Poutine at Naberezhnye Chelnys, it was decided to make the rally a long term event, with the ambition to link its destiny to that of the 2014 Winter Olympics to be held at Sochi.

With the second edition of the Silk Way Rally, where the route will be laid out between Saint-Petersburg and Sochi, Russia will host its first ever motorsports event of an international stature.

The perspective of an annual event, with a technical and physical challenge over several thousand kilometres will quickly position the rally as a major date on the sporting calendar.

The preoccupation of the competitors, in search of sensations and speed will join that of the large number of spectators expected at the start and finish line of the rally.

After Saint-Petersburg, the former capital recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, the cars and trucks will head south towards the Black Sea, using the ancient route of the Vikings on their way to the Orient.

In addition to this historical significance, the route will feature all the components of rally-raid to test the champions of the sport, including Volkswagen and Kamaz who will be fighting to keep their respective titles.
