2014 Utah Motocross – Season Finale Stats
Last year, the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship debuted at the new circuit at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.
It was the first time an outdoor MX race occurred in Utah since 1973, and one man dominated – the 2014 AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki Racing Team), who is not participating in 2014 MX due to surgeries.
And this weekend, the 1.2-mile Miller Motorsports Park will host the concluding round of 2014 MX, the Zions Bank Utah National.
In the 450 class, the title battle is down to two teammates – Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen. The German rookie, who won last week in Indiana, leads the 2010 MX Champion Dungey by 20 points.
As for the 250 class, Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin clinched the title last weekend at the debut Thor Indiana National.
Many challenges will present themselves in Utah, considering the unique design of the course. It has an uphill start, huge triple step-up jumps, and many off-camber turns.
For 2014, MMP revised the south end of the circuit more of a loop to provide better race flow, more passing opportunities and shorter lap times. The track will also no longer cross the asphalt road-racing track, the start/finish line has been moved to the straightaway section on the north side of the course and a number of the jump landings have been modified to improve the track flow, MMP reports.
The track surface has been improved with the addition of more sand, rich dirt and mulch to provide an improved and consistent racing surface.
Elevation will also present challenges. Nearly a mile high in elevation, the air is thin at Miller Motorsports Park – similar to what the riders/teams experienced in Lakewood, Colo., earlier this year.
