2014 Sachsenring MotoGP Results
Spoiler Alert: 2014 MotoGP results from Sachsenring, Germany, listed below
The 2014 MotoGP Championship reached the halfway point Sunday at Sachsenring in Germany.
The German GP began under rainy conditions, though the track dried out near the end. But this confused many on what setup to choose, though most switched to dry setup after the final warm-up lap. Due to this quick switch just before the start, these riders were forced to start the race from pit lane, including the podium finishers.
Regardless of conditions and the start from pit lane, Repsol Honda Marc Marquez continued his dominance, winning the ninth-straight race of 2014 MotoGP.
Marquez took the lead on lap six, and maintained it, eventually finishing 1.466 seconds ahead of teammate Dani Pedrosa, and 10.317 seconds ahead of Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Jorge Lorenzo.
When the race got underway, LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl took the opening lead. The German was one of only nine riders starting from the grid; the remaining 14 started from pit lane.
But Bradl’s time at the top was short lived; he ended up running slicks on a wet condition, which caused him to quickly loose positions. Before his home crowd, Bradl eventually dropped to 16th.
Marquez and his teammate Pedrosa would battle their way to the front, eventually taking the lead on lap six with Pedrosa in tow. The two factory Repsol Honda RC213V prototypes pulled away from the pack.
Marquez, who qualified on pole, held off Pedrosa for his ninth-straight win.
“Before going out on track I thought it would be a similar race to the Assen, but in the end the surface dried out very quickly. I saw on the grid that Bradl had gone with the slick tyre option and I really had my doubts, because the area around the back of the track was still wet,” Marquez says.
“I finally decided to see what Dani [Pedrosa] and Valentino [Rossi] were going to do, as they are my main rivals in the Championship and if you get it wrong in these races, you can lose a lot of points. That’s why I decided to copy their strategy. The race was nice, especially the first part which was when I enjoyed it the most!”
Lorenzo finished alone in third, followed by Movistar Yamaha MotoGP teammate Valentino Rossi nearly nine seconds back. Completing the top five was Pramac Racing Ducati’s Andrea Iannone.
Rounding out the top 10 were brothers Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) and Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) and Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team).
A difficult weekend for Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3) ended with a 19th place finish after an early crash – his fifth of the visit to Germany. Michael Laverty (Paul Bird Motorsport) also crashed out on lap 19.
As for the Americans, Drive M7 Aspar’s Nicky Hayden finished 14th, over 46 seconds off the pace. NGM Forward Racing’s Colin Edwards finished 20th, over a minute behind.
