2014 Mugello MotoGP Qualifying Results
And he did it again. Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez has achieved his sixth pole of 2014 MotoGP at the Mugello circuit, which resides just outside of Florence in Italy’s beautiful Tuscany region.
The reigning MotoGP Champion, who became the first rider to win the opening five rounds from the pole since Giacomo Agostini in 1971 (MV Agusta), also set a new fastest lap at the 3.259-mile Mugello circuit on his third try in qualifying 2. The time? A 1:47.270, just 0.113 of a second behind the best pole lap set by teammate Dani Pedrosa last season.
This was also Marquez’s seventh-consecutive pole including last year’s qualifying at the Valencia season finale.
Joining Marquez on the front row is Pramac Racing Ducati’s Andrea Iannone – who broke the MotoGP Top Speed Record in FP3 with 217.23 mph – and Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo. Iannone qualified 0.180 of a second behind, and Lorenzo 0.251 of a second back. This was Lorenzo’s third front-row start, though he only achieved one podium so far (Argentina).
Iannone suffered two DNFs in last two rounds (Le Mans, Jerez), but the cheering Mugello crowd likely gave the Italian on an Italian bike that extra push needed to get up to speed.
As for the absolute home favorite Valentino Rossi, the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP pilot didn’t get off to the best start at his 300th GP; he qualified 10th, 0.521 of a second off the pace.
Heading up the second row is Pedrosa, who was 0.314 of a second off his teammate’s pace. He will be joined by Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Pol Espargaro – who suffered a crash at turn nine but walked away unhurt – and Ducati Team’s Cal Crutchlow.
The third-row starters all qualified within a half of second of Marquez. Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Bradley Smith will begin on top of the third row. The Brit will be joined by Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso – another Italian/Italian combo at Mugello – and LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl.
GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista and NGM Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro progressed into Q2 from Q1, finishing 11th and 12th respectively, behind nine-time World Champion Rossi.
As for the Americans, Drive M7 Aspar Honda’s Nicky Hayden had to withdraw from Mugello MotoGP due to an annoying wrist injury that plagued him for two years. Hayden will undergo wrist surgery in Italy on Tuesday. As for NGM Forward Racing’s Colin Edwards, he qualified 18th.
The 23-rider grid will be back on the Mugello circuit Sunday morning for the 23-lap Italian Grand Prix. Fox Sports 1 will provide live coverage of the race beginning at 7 a.m. ET; the coverage includes a reply of the previous round at Le Mans.
As the series begins round six of 18, Marquez has a perfect 125 points – 42 ahead of teammate Pedrosa, and 44 ahead of Rossi.
